Epsom Racecourse

Name: Epsom Downs Racecourse Consultancy

Location: Epsom, Surrey

Client: Epsom Downs Racecourse

Role: Structural and Safety Consultant

Description: CNM have been employed by Epsom Racecourse from 1992 where the firm initially gave advice on the temporary structures being erected for the famous Epsom Derby Meeting. The consultancy developed into a more involved role when in 1997 CNM carried out an in-depth assessment of the spectator capacities available in the main enclosures. This work resulted in the alteration of some of the original stands where CNM identified bottleneck conditions preventing the free movement of the crowd between races. This exercise was to prove invaluable when in later years further development meant that the racecourse had to plan for a prolonged construction stage for the new Duchess Stand.

CNM were able to advise on crowd capacities over the 3 year period 2007, 2008 and 2009, when this main public stand enclosure saw the demolition of two old grandstands and the erection of the new stand. The construction could not be phased to be completed between Derby meetings meaning that these had to be staged in subsequent years, firstly with no stands, then with the new steppings only available and finally with the new facilities completed.

Bearing in mind CNM's experience with the course and with racecourses in general, the client appointed the firm as an independent consultant to aid their architects, Roberts Limbrick in the detailed planning of the grandstand, steppings, crush barriers and site lines, etc.
